A deadly fire and riot erupted Saturday at the Kobani prison in a predominantly Kurdish town in northern Syria, killing at least seven people, state media and monitors reported.
State news agency SANA said the blaze began when inmates at the Kobani facility rioted amid tensions that had flared the previous day between Kurds and Arabs. SANA added that the prison remains under the control of Kurdish fighters, even though Syrian government forces recently entered the town along the border with Turkey.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said the unrest was sparked by plans to transfer some prisoners to a facility in the northern city of Aleppo. Local sources also reported that riots broke out Friday after Kurds accused Arabs of killing a Kurdish man, intensifying already strained local relations.
Context
Kobani, which endured a siege by the Islamic State group about a decade ago, later served as the launch point for a U.S.-backed Kurdish offensive that culminated in the extremists losing the last territory they held in 2019.
