South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS) said on Thursday that Kim Jong Un's daughter, Kim Ju Ae, is being groomed as his likely successor and is believed to have a younger sibling of unknown gender. The assessment offers one of the clearest publicly available snapshots of the private Kim family amid persistent uncertainty about the leader's children.

The NIS reiterated an earlier estimate that Kim may have up to three children but acknowledged gaps in verification about the number, ages and birth order of those offspring. The agency said it is still examining reports of an older son but currently believes that, even if an older brother exists, he would not be positioned to inherit leadership.
"The National Intelligence Service currently assesses that Kim Ju Ae is being groomed as the successor and understands she has a younger sibling of unknown gender," the agency said.

Kim Ju Ae first appeared publicly in 2022 when she accompanied her father to an intercontinental ballistic missile launch. Since then she has been visible at several high-profile events, including a visit to Beijing. Experts note that succession in the Kim dynasty has emphasized perceived capability and loyalty over strict birth order. Lim Eul-chul, a professor at Kyungnam University, told AFP that Kim Jong Un himself took power despite not being the eldest son, and is likely to choose a successor based on who he judges best able to preserve and develop his legacy.

Information about the private lives of North Korean leaders is tightly controlled, making independent confirmation difficult. Prior to Ju Ae's public introduction, her existence was largely unverified aside from anecdotal reports — including mentions by former NBA player Dennis Rodman, who visited North Korea several times between 2013 and 2017.
Observers have also noted Ju Ae's public styling — from luxury-branded sunglasses to a Cartier watch — and occasions where she has mirrored her father’s distinctive attire, reinforcing her high-profile image in state media.
Implications: If the NIS assessment is accurate, Kim Ju Ae’s visible promotion signals a clear attempt by Pyongyang to shape succession perceptions both domestically and internationally.
