A Jacksonville drug search on May 20, 2025, uncovered a roughly 9-foot alligator confined in a backyard and nine neglected dogs across two properties. Marquis Williams was convicted on charges including animal fighting, animal cruelty, drug possession and illegal alligator possession. He faces up to 65 years in Florida State Prison, and sentencing by Circuit Judge Anthony Salem will be scheduled at a later date.

A Jacksonville drug investigation that began with a search warrant on May 20, 2025, produced an unexpected discovery: a roughly 9-foot alligator confined in a small backyard enclosure and nine severely neglected dogs across two nearby properties. Prosecutors say the evidence revealed organized dog-fighting activity in addition to illegal drug possession.

Details of the Raid

Sheriff's SWAT and Narcotics units executed the warrant at a home on Orlando Avenue near Rowe Avenue and Lem Turner Road. Detectives searched the residence, a truck and surrounding grounds and reported recovering cocaine, oxycodone and marijuana during the operation.

Officers found an adult alligator inside a small fenced area in the backyard. Authorities said the enclosure did not provide adequate access to water. A nuisance-alligator handler from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission removed the animal from the property.

Animals and Evidence of Dog Fighting

Prosecutors say six dogs recovered from Williams' property displayed signs of severe neglect. Investigators located equipment and other items consistent with dog fighting throughout the home and yard. A separate warrant for a vacant lot across the street turned up three additional dogs in poor condition and more gear linked to animal fighting.

A later search of the defendant's cellphone produced further evidence of illegal dog fighting, the Fourth Judicial Circuit State Attorney's Office reported. The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office in coordination with Duval County Animal Care and Protective Services.

Convictions and Next Steps

More than a year after the search, a Duval County jury returned guilty verdicts on Aug. 6. Marquis Williams was convicted of three counts of fighting or baiting animals, nine counts of animal cruelty, possession of a controlled substance, possession of less than 20 grams of cannabis, and violating Florida laws prohibiting the illegal killing, possessing or capturing of alligators or other crocodilians or their eggs.

Prosecutors say Williams faces up to 65 years in Florida State Prison; a formal sentence has not yet been set. Circuit Judge Anthony Salem is expected to impose sentence at a later hearing.

Agencies involved: Fourth Judicial Circuit State Attorney's Office, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Duval County Animal Care and Protective Services, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The courtroom outcome replaces the earlier allegations with criminal convictions. The investigation began as a drug probe and expanded after officers encountered neglected animals and the alligator on the property.
