UCSB PhD Candidate Vikram Mubayi Found Dead After Solo Hike in Eastern Sierra; Investigation Ongoing

Vikram Mubayi, a doctoral candidate in chemical engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, was found dead after disappearing during a solo hike in the Big Pine Lakes area of Inyo National Forest in the Sierra Nevada. His family reported losing contact with him during a weekend trip; search teams recovered his remains on Aug. 3, 2026.
Mubayi’s last known communication with his family was approximately 8:37 p.m. on Aug. 1, when he was hiking near Agassiz Col and had left his vehicle at the trailhead. He was carrying a Garmin satellite device and had shared GPS coordinates during the trek.

Search and Investigation
When Mubayi failed to return and communications stopped, his family alerted the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office. Inyo County Search and Rescue personnel, with assistance from the California Highway Patrol, conducted search operations in the Big Pine Lakes area. Authorities recovered his remains on Aug. 3 and notified the family.
Officials have not released a cause or manner of death. Investigators have said there is currently no evidence of foul play and that the circumstances remain under investigation.
Academic Work and Background
Academic Focus: Mubayi was a PhD candidate in UCSB’s Department of Chemical Engineering and a researcher in the O’Malley Lab. His work examined anaerobic bacteria that break down lignin, a resilient component of plant biomass, exploring biological routes to convert plant waste — and some plastics — into sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based materials.
Teaching and Service: He served as a teaching assistant and mentor to students at UCSB.
Personal Background: Born and raised in Hong Kong, Mubayi earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2022, where he worked as a research assistant and teaching assistant. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hiking, tennis and cycling. In 2022 he participated in Illini 4000’s cross-country ride from New York to San Francisco to raise funds for cancer research and patient support services.
The family and university community have received an outpouring of support since Mubayi’s disappearance and subsequent death. Authorities continue their investigation and have asked anyone with additional information about Mubayi’s movements in the Big Pine Lakes area to contact the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office.
