Lebanon's President Aoun said recent Rome talks with Israel showed "positive progress" on borders and prisoner exchanges, and he expressed hope practical steps would follow. The U.S. State Department called the discussions "fruitful" and said both sides were closer to advancing pilot zones. Meanwhile, Lebanon reported renewed Israeli strikes — including shelling in Meiss el-Jabal, attacks on utility workers in Bint Jbeil, drone activity over Beirut, and injuries in Tyre and al-Mansouri.
Lebanon Sees "Positive Progress" In Talks With Israel, But Strikes Persist

Lebanon's President Aoun voiced cautious optimism after the latest round of Lebanon–Israel negotiations in Rome, saying the talks showed "positive progress" on border issues and prisoner exchanges even as Israeli strikes continued across southern Lebanon.
Details From The Presidency
Speaking at a cabinet session, President Aoun said the talks addressed the ceasefire, demolition and bulldozing of homes, border demarcation, prisoner exchanges and so-called "pilot zones," according to a statement from the Lebanese presidency. He said he was hopeful "that practical steps will soon emerge." The presidency statement also noted Aoun's recent contacts with senior U.S. officials and said the U.S. administration understands Lebanon's situation.
U.S. Response
The U.S. State Department described the discussions as "fruitful" and said Lebanon and Israel are closer to an agreement on advancing and expanding the pilot zones process — a limited, practical step aimed at reducing frontline tensions and facilitating humanitarian access.
Violence On The Ground
Despite diplomatic movement, Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) reported fresh Israeli strikes. Incidents included early-morning artillery shelling and machine-gun fire around Meiss el-Jabal, reported drone flights over Beirut and its suburbs, and gunfire or strikes that wounded at least one Lebanese soldier. NNA said Israeli forces fired on a team of municipal water workers repairing infrastructure in Bint Jbeil and that an explosion occurred near a mosque in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah.
The Lebanese army said a soldier was "slightly injured" after an Israeli strike hit an army bulldozer in al-Mansouri, Tyre, where troops were clearing roads and removing rubble. Earlier in the week, Tyre was hit by air raids and shelling that wounded at least eight people. The Israeli military also issued a forced-displacement order for residents of al-Mansouri, a move residents say affects areas outside Israel's declared occupation zone.
Outlook
President Aoun emphasized the need to translate diplomatic progress into practical measures to protect civilians and stabilize the border. Observers say any agreement on pilot zones or prisoner exchanges will require careful implementation and monitoring to prevent renewed escalation on the ground.
