An unidentified man in a white hat entered a burning two-storey home in Stanthorpe on August 5 and carried five toddlers (ages 3–5) out one by one. The fire started in the central stairwell and trapped the children and their 26-year-old mother, who jumped from a second-storey window and broke her arm. Neighbours smashed a window and used a garden hose to help contain the blaze before Queensland Fire & Rescue arrived. Authorities are seeking to identify the rescuer to thank him.

A mysterious Good Samaritan is being credited with saving five young children from a house fire in Stanthorpe on Wednesday, August 5. Neighbours reported heavy smoke pouring from the windows of a two-storey home on the town's eastern side, and emergency crews arrived at about 8:41 a.m., according to 7News.com.au.

Queensland Fire & Rescue said the blaze began in the central stairwell of the home, which quickly filled the upper floor with smoke and trapped five children, ages three to five, along with their 26-year-old mother. The mother escaped by jumping from a second-storey window and suffered a broken arm; she was treated for her injury and for smoke inhalation.

Several neighbours heard the children's cries for help. One resident grabbed a shovel and smashed a ground-floor window to provide an access point as thick smoke billowed from the property. At that moment, a passing stranger — described as a man in a white hat, possibly in his 40s — climbed through the broken window and ran upstairs through the smoke.

The man carried each toddler out one at a time, reportedly going up the staircase five times to rescue all of them. Reverend Peter Evans told reporters:

"He went up the stairs five times and brought all five of the kids down and saved their lives."

An 80-year-old neighbour was also nearby using a garden hose to spray water at the blaze before firefighters arrived. Brett Gehrke of Queensland Fire & Rescue praised the neighbours' quick actions, saying the fire was contained to the central staircase because of their intervention.

Paramedics treated the five children at the scene and then transported them to Stanthorpe Hospital. The mother and the elderly neighbour were also treated for smoke inhalation.

After first responders reached the property, the unnamed rescuer reportedly left the scene and continued his morning walk. Authorities are trying to identify him so they can formally thank him for his courage and lifesaving actions. Anyone with information is asked to contact local police.
