Ex-Police Officer Cameron Ross Lodges Appeal Against 10-Year Sentence For Rape And Abuse

A former Police Scotland officer convicted of raping two women and subjecting a third to prolonged abuse has lodged an appeal against both his conviction and his 10-year prison sentence.
Cameron Ross, 39, was found guilty by a jury at the High Court in Edinburgh in May and was sentenced earlier this month. The offences were said to have taken place in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis in 2012 and 2014, and in Inverness between October 2019 and June 2022. He has been placed on the sex offenders register.
Appeal Intimation Filed
The Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service confirmed that an intimation of an intention to appeal against conviction and sentence was lodged on 15 July. Under Scottish procedure, an intimation must be filed within two weeks; a full statement of grounds of appeal is then required within the following eight weeks.
Details Heard At Trial
At trial the jury heard accounts from three complainants. One woman said Ross raped her after they met at a party on Lewis; she told the court he "pinned her down to a bed" and described the attack as traumatising. A second woman gave evidence that, in June 2014, Ross sat on her and restrained her before raping her. A third complainant described a campaign of abusive behaviour in Inverness from October 2019 until June 2022, including threats to kill, repeated physical assaults and an occasion when Ross brandished a knife.
“He pinned her down to a bed,” the first complainant told the court, describing the lasting impact of the assault.
Ross was suspended from Police Scotland in June 2022 after the allegations were reported and resigned from the force last month. His legal team has indicated an appeal is being pursued but has not yet lodged the full grounds of appeal.
Next Steps
Once the full grounds of appeal are submitted to the court within the statutory period, a timetable for the appeal will be set by the court. Further comment from the defence and prosecution is expected through legal channels.
