Investigators Say Grand Haven Family's Deaths Were A Murder‑Suicide; Father Killed Wife and Six Children Before Taking His Own Life
Authorities rule Michigan family's deaths as murder-suicide

Authorities in Michigan have concluded that the eight members of a Grand Haven Township family found dead in a burning home died in a murder‑suicide. Investigators say 47‑year‑old Kristopher Karolkiewicz killed his 39‑year‑old wife Amanda and their six children before taking his own life; autopsies found gunshot wounds as the cause of death. Fire investigators reported the blaze appears to have been set intentionally in multiple interior locations, and the Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit is assisting the ongoing probe. The school district paid tribute to Amanda, who worked as a substitute teacher.

Authorities in Michigan announced Monday that all eight members of a Grand Haven Township family found dead inside a burning home over the weekend died in a murder‑suicide. Investigators say the father killed his 39‑year‑old wife and their six children, then took his own life and set the residence on fire.

"This is far more than a news story. This situation personally impacts dozens if not hundreds of people in the county. Our hearts go out to those families, the neighbors and co‑workers, the teachers, the students of Grand Haven Public Schools and the friends of the victims," Capt. Jake Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office told reporters at a press conference.

Firefighters and police were dispatched at 11:42 a.m. EDT Friday after neighbors reported smoke coming from the home. Responders found eight deceased family members inside the residence and visible signs of fire.

On Monday, Capt. Sparks said autopsies confirmed that gunshot wounds were the cause of death for all eight people. The manner of death for the mother and six children was classified as homicide, while the father's death was ruled a suicide, consistent with investigators' conclusion of a murder‑suicide.

Sparks identified the father as 47‑year‑old Kristopher Karolkiewicz and the mother as 39‑year‑old Amanda Karolkiewicz. He did not release the children's names but said there were four boys, ages 15, 12, 11 and 5, and two adopted girls, both age 11.

"The investigation at this point shows that this was a murder‑suicide with a fire being started after the murders," Sparks said.

Officials said preliminary fire‑scene evidence indicates the blaze was intentionally set in multiple locations inside the home, including on the first floor and in the basement. The Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit is assisting local investigators to determine the fire's origin and cause.

Authorities believe the sequence of events may have begun Thursday night and continued into Friday morning. Neighbors reported smelling smoke earlier on the morning emergency services were called, before the fire and visible smoke became more apparent.

Sparks also said the firearm used in the incident was a registered handgun. The family's pets — several dogs and at least one cat — also died, likely from the fire or smoke inhalation.

Grand Haven Area Public Schools identified Amanda Karolkiewicz as a substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary. Kristin Perkowski, superintendent of the district, released a statement mourning the loss and praising Amanda's service to students and staff.

Authorities emphasized the case remains active and open as investigators work to clarify the events that led up to the tragedy and to gather additional evidence and answers for the community.
