At the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, President Trump said "Russia should make a deal" to end the war in Ukraine after meeting Volodymyr Zelensky. He described the heavy casualties on both sides as "ridiculous" and pledged to do what he can. Zelensky suggested Trump consider hosting talks with Vladimir Putin in the United States, arguing such an offer might be harder for Moscow to refuse.

US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that "Russia should make a deal" to end its war with Ukraine after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France.

Trump told reporters he had met with Zelensky at the summit and that further discussions were planned later in the day as G7 leaders pressed Moscow over more than four years of fighting. He highlighted the heavy casualties on both sides, calling the toll "ridiculous" and saying he would do what he could to help find a resolution.

"Admit the whole thing is ridiculous. So, yeah, I'm going to do whatever I can," Trump said.

Zelensky, for his part, said he had suggested to Trump the idea of hosting talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the United States, reasoning that a US-based meeting might be "harder to refuse" than an offer to meet at the G7.

Why It Matters

The exchange underscores renewed diplomatic maneuvering at the G7 as leaders seek ways to increase pressure on Moscow and explore possible avenues for ending a conflict that has caused significant casualties and disruption across the region. Any proposed talks involving Trump, Zelensky and Putin would represent a major diplomatic development, though concrete steps toward a negotiated settlement were not announced.
