Jean‑Luc Mélenchon has confirmed he will run in France’s 2027 presidential election, saying La France Insoumise is united behind his candidacy. The 74‑year‑old has run three times previously, finishing third in 2022. President Emmanuel Macron cannot run for a third consecutive term, while centre‑right figure Edouard Philippe is expected to stand. The far‑right National Rally polls strongly but suffered setbacks in March’s municipal elections; Marine Le Pen is barred from running pending an appeal, and Jordan Bardella would likely replace her if her appeal fails.

Jean‑Luc Mélenchon, the long-standing leader of the hard-left party La France Insoumise, confirmed on Sunday that he will stand in France’s 2027 presidential election.

“Yes, I am a candidate,” Mélenchon told TF1 television, underscoring his intention to run. The 74-year-old veteran of the French left served in ministerial roles when he was a member of the Socialist Party and has previously stood for president in 2012, 2017 and 2022, finishing third in the most recent contest behind Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron.

“We have less than a year to go until the second round of the election. With us, it is all sorted out — there is a team, a manifesto, and a single candidate,” Mélenchon said, stressing his movement’s unity behind his bid.

Under the French constitution, President Emmanuel Macron is ineligible to seek a third consecutive term in 2027. On the centre-right, Edouard Philippe — Macron’s first prime minister in 2017 — is widely expected to run.

The far-right National Rally (RN), led by Marine Le Pen and her ally Jordan Bardella, polls strongly in many surveys. However, the RN failed to secure control of any major city in the nationwide municipal elections in March. Le Pen is currently barred from standing because of a conviction for misuse of European Union funds; she is appealing the ruling, and if her appeal fails Bardella is widely expected to be the RN’s candidate.

What This Means

Mélenchon’s candidacy confirms a crowded and polarized field heading into 2027, with a united hard-left campaign aligning against centre-right and far-right challengers. The coming months are likely to focus on candidate positioning, coalition-building on the left and right, and how legal and political developments — including Le Pen’s appeal — reshape the race.
