10-Year-Old Launched Through Bedroom Window After Car Crashes Into Home — Still Recovering Six Months Later

A Michigan girl remains in recovery six months after a vehicle crashed into her family’s home and launched her through a bedroom window. The Oct. 13, 2025, collision in Center Line occurred around 3 a.m., when a car struck the house and sent 9-year-old Laila Breitshtrus from her bed out into the yard.
Severe Injuries and Ongoing Care
Laila, now 10, suffered multiple serious injuries in the impact: three spinal injuries, a fractured nose and a lacerated liver, according to Taylor Brashaw, who later set up a GoFundMe to help cover the family’s medical costs. She continues to attend doctor appointments and physical therapy six months after the crash and reports persistent pain during routine activities.
“If I do too many things at once, like I'll clean my room and do my chores and not take breaks, my back … like my lower tailbone will start to hurt,” Laila told ABC affiliate WXYZ.
Her mother, Rachel Wright, said the family does not expect Laila to make a full recovery. “She’s never going to be 100% again,” Wright said, adding that they cannot undo what happened but are focused on supporting Laila’s rehabilitation.
Driver, Charges and Court Status
Authorities identified 20-year-old Caris Adell Wade as the driver. Court records reviewed by PEOPLE show Wade was charged with one count of reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function and one count of failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death. Wade fled the scene after the crash.
Wade pleaded no contest to the felony charges on March 2 and was scheduled for sentencing on Wednesday, April 29. The family hopes the legal process will reflect the lasting consequences of the crash.
Family Response
In the wake of the accident, neighbors and community members have supported the family, and a GoFundMe organized by Taylor Brashaw aims to help cover mounting medical expenses. Laila and her family have expressed a desire for the driver to understand the long-term impact of the crash.
“I just wish she knew how much it's changed my life,” Laila told WXYZ.
What’s next: Laila will continue therapy and medical follow-up as her family navigates recovery and the pending sentencing of the driver.
