An American participant in the U.S. Antarctic Program was medevaced from McMurdo Station to Christchurch Hospital on July 31, 2026, after a medical emergency. The Australian Antarctic Division and Skytraders carried out the flight from Hobart with support from the New Zealand Defence Force at the NSF's request. The operation took place in "dangerous" Antarctic winter conditions, with temperatures falling to −43°C; the patient was admitted in serious condition and no further details have been released.
Dangerous Antarctic Winter Medevac: American Flown From McMurdo Station To Christchurch Hospital

An American participant in the United States Antarctic Program was evacuated from McMurdo Station and flown to Christchurch Hospital in New Zealand on July 31, 2026, after a medical emergency, officials said.
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), which manages the U.S. Antarctic Program, said the patient was transported from McMurdo Station for emergency care in an operation conducted in "dangerous" Antarctic winter conditions.
International response: At the NSF's request, the Australian Antarctic Division and its aviation partner Skytraders — with assistance from the New Zealand Defence Force — carried out the medevac. An Australian aircraft made the roughly five-hour flight from Hobart to McMurdo Station and returned to Christchurch with the patient.
The Australian Antarctic Division said the aircraft arrived at McMurdo in "complete darkness" and that temperatures during the operation dipped as low as −43°C (−45°F). Despite deteriorating conditions, the crew transferred the patient onto the plane and flew to Christchurch, where the individual was admitted in serious condition.
"We are grateful to the first responders who provided emergency medical care and to our Australian and New Zealand partners for their life-saving transportation support in dangerous Antarctic winter conditions," the U.S. National Science Foundation said.
No additional details about the patient's identity or medical condition have been released. McMurdo Station, the main U.S. research station on Ross Island, supports scientific and logistical operations in Antarctica and relies on international partners for emergency assistance during winter months when conditions are especially hazardous.
