Bodycam Shows Luigi Mangione Quip as Officers Surround Him at McDonald’s During Suppression Hearing

Bodycam and officer testimony at a suppression hearing show Luigi Mangione joking as a large group of officers surrounded him at a McDonald’s five days after UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot. Officers say Mangione presented a forged New Jersey ID under the name "Mark Rosario" and claimed to be homeless. Prosecutors say they recovered the suspected murder weapon and journals from Mangione’s backpack; his defense argues police and corrections staff violated his Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights and seeks to suppress evidence.

Bodycam Footage, Testimony Played at Suppression Hearing

Court testimony and police bodycam footage shown at a suppression hearing on Thursday depict accused shooter Luigi Mangione making a joking remark as more than a dozen officers converged on him at a McDonald’s, five days after the ambush slaying of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

How Officers Located Mangione

Altoona Police Officers Tyler Frye and Joseph Detwiler testified they responded after a McDonald’s manager reported a suspicious person resembling the NYPD’s person of interest in Thompson’s murder. According to testimony, Detwiler asked Mangione to lower his face covering; once he did, the officer said he recognized him from television coverage of the investigation.

False Identification and Initial Statements

Investigators say Mangione presented what they allege was a forged New Jersey driver’s license bearing the name "Mark Rosario." Police later recovered Mangione’s true Maryland-issued license in his possession. When questioned about why he was in the area, Mangione told officers he was homeless and that he had not recently been to New York, Officer Frye testified.

“Are you guys calling a couple more cars?” Mangione quipped, according to bodycam footage played for the court after additional officers arrived. That clip has not been publicly released.

Evidence at the Center of the Hearing

Prosecutors have shown multiple angles of the encounter as part of the weeklong suppression hearing. They say that officers later recovered the suspected murder weapon from a backpack belonging to Mangione, along with journals in which he allegedly criticized the health insurance industry and described reasoning prosecutors say supports an alleged motive to kill Thompson.

Mangione is accused of following Thompson to Manhattan and shooting him in the back outside a Midtown Hilton that was scheduled to host UnitedHealthcare investors on Dec. 4, 2024. Prosecutors have indicated they intend to seek the death penalty in the case.

Defense Arguments and Next Steps

Mangione’s defense has focused on claims that police and jail personnel violated his Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights, seeking to suppress evidence before trial. Prosecutors have rejected those claims, and legal analysts have told news outlets that while the defense raises legitimate legal issues, persuading a judge to exclude the contested evidence will be difficult.

The suppression hearing continues as both sides replay bodycam and surveillance footage and present testimony about the events surrounding the arrest and the evidence recovered.
