New Zealand declared on 466-8 to set the West Indies a target of 531 in the first Test at Hagley Oval. At lunch the tourists were 20-0, trailing by 510. Kemar Roach took 5-78, his 12th Test five-wicket haul and moved to 291 career wickets, fifth on the West Indies list. New Zealand batted 14 extra overs rather than declaring overnight, and injuries to Tom Blundell and Nathan Smith leave their bowling unit lighter into the final day.

Christchurch, Hagley Oval — New Zealand declared their second innings on 466-8 to set the West Indies a target of 531 on the fourth day of the opening Test.

At lunch the tourists were 20-0 after 11 overs, with John Campbell on 11 and Tagenarine Chanderpaul on 5, still trailing New Zealand by 510 runs.

New Zealand resumed the day at 417-4, already 481 runs ahead, and elected to bat on for a further 14 overs rather than declaring overnight. That subdued late-session batting left the hosts unable to produce more fit batters: Will Young fell for 23, Michael Bracewell 24, Matt Henry 8, Jacob Duffy 10, and Zak Foulkes remained 11 not out when the innings closed.

Fast bowler Kemar Roach was the pick of the visitors, finishing with 5-78 after removing Bracewell, Henry and Duffy. The five-wicket haul was Roach's 12th in Tests; at 37 he became the oldest bowler to take a five-for against New Zealand and his 291 Test wickets move him to fifth on the West Indies' all-time list.

Wicketkeeper Tom Blundell and allrounder Nathan Smith were both injured and unavailable to bat in New Zealand's second innings — a factor that will increase the workload for seamers Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy and Zak Foulkes moving forward.

The Hagley pitch retains some life, with the new ball producing awkward bounce at times. Tagenarine Chanderpaul was struck on the badge of his helmet by a short ball from Foulkes shortly before lunch, and Campbell was hit on the foot and was visibly limping as the interval approached.

Match Situation: West Indies need 531 to win; they are 20-0 at lunch and still trailing by 510.
