May 10 (Reuters) — Six bodies were discovered on Sunday inside a freight boxcar at a remote Union Pacific train yard in Laredo, Texas, near the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said.
A Union Pacific employee made the discovery and Laredo police and firefighters later confirmed the deaths, Laredo Police Investigator Joe Baeza said. Police have not yet determined how the individuals died and the investigation is ongoing.
There were no survivors, and authorities have not disclosed the victims' identities or their places of origin, Baeza said.
Context
Multiple fatalities in enclosed vehicles or railcars have occurred in the region before. Officials pointed to a 2022 incident near San Antonio in which 53 people were found dead in an abandoned tractor-trailer with malfunctioning air conditioning.
