Beijing Court Orders Malaysia Airlines To Compensate Eight MH370 Families

A Beijing court ordered Malaysia Airlines to pay 2.9 million yuan (about $410,000) to each of eight families of passengers who disappeared on Flight MH370. The payments cover death compensation, funeral costs and emotional distress; the passengers have been declared legally dead. MH370 vanished in 2014 with 239 people aboard, and despite extensive searches the cause and fate remain unknown. The court said 23 cases are still pending, 47 were settled, and Malaysia plans to resume a search on Dec. 30.

A Beijing court has ruled that Malaysia Airlines must pay 2.9 million yuan (about $410,000) to each of eight families whose relatives disappeared when Flight MH370 vanished more than a decade ago, the court said in a statement on Monday.

Court Ruling And Compensation

The judgment requires the airline to provide death compensation, cover funeral expenses and pay damages for emotional distress to each family. Although the passengers’ fates remain unknown, they have been declared legally dead under Chinese law.

Background: The MH370 Disappearance

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared after departing Kuala Lumpur for Beijing in 2014 with 239 passengers and crew on board. Despite exhaustive searches and international investigations, officials have not determined why the aircraft went down or what happened to those aboard. Most of the passengers were Chinese, and their families in China have continued to press for answers and legal recourse.

Related Cases And Ongoing Search Plans

The court said 23 related lawsuits remain pending, while 47 other families reached settlements with the airline and withdrew their suits. Separately, the Malaysian government announced last Wednesday that it plans to resume a search for the aircraft beginning Dec. 30.

Implications: The ruling provides legal compensation to the eight families but does not resolve the broader mystery of MH370’s disappearance. It may prompt further legal actions and renewed attention to the planned search effort.
