Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt Slams Administration’s Pause On Wind Projects After Judge Rules Suspensions Illegal

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt criticized the Trump administration for pausing approvals of wind energy projects, calling the move politically motivated. A federal judge ruled that multiple federal agencies illegally suspended wind authorizations, a decision that could reopen stalled projects. Oklahoma has more than 12,700 MW of installed wind capacity and ranked third nationally in wind-generated electricity, with the Traverse Wind Project contributing 999 MW.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt (R) on Tuesday criticized the Trump administration for pausing approvals of wind energy projects nationwide, calling the move politically motivated.

Stitt spoke at Semafor’s "Powering America’s Future" event, telling host Ben Smith:

"You cannot weaponize these things and just for political purposes put your thumb on the scale."

On his first day in office, President Trump issued an executive order that prohibited the federal government from auctioning rights to develop offshore wind farms and temporarily blocked construction of some wind projects on public lands. The administration has since halted sign-offs on a range of green energy projects, including proposed wind farms.

On Monday, a federal judge found that the Interior Department, Commerce Department, Environmental Protection Agency and Army Corps of Engineers had illegally suspended authorizations for wind energy projects, a decision that could reopen permitting for stalled projects.

Oklahoma’s Wind Profile

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), Oklahoma had more than 12,700 megawatts of installed wind capacity as of the end of April. Last year the state ranked third nationally in electricity generated from wind—behind Texas and Iowa—producing roughly 9 percent of the nation’s wind-generated electricity.

Oklahoma’s largest wind facility, the Traverse Wind Project, has 999 megawatts of generating capacity and 356 turbines.

The Hill said it reached out to the White House for comment on Governor Stitt’s remarks.
