Former Florida Paramedic Faces Trial Over Alleged Ambulance Molestation and Credit-Card Fraud

James Melady, 38, a former Daytona Beach paramedic, is set to face trial after prosecutors say a video shows him allegedly molesting an unconscious patient in an ambulance in October 2021. He was arrested in September 2024, and in March 2025 was hit with additional charges alleging he stole patients' credit cards and IDs and made fraudulent purchases, including a $715 charge. Investigators have identified three alleged victims; Melady has pleaded not guilty and jury selection began Dec. 8.

A former paramedic from Daytona Beach, Florida, is scheduled to stand trial after authorities say he molested an unconscious patient inside an ambulance and later used victims' financial information to make fraudulent purchases.

Investigation and Arrest

James Melady, 38, was arrested in September 2024 after investigators uncovered a video they say shows an October 2021 incident in which Melady allegedly assaulted an unconscious woman while transporting her to a hospital. The Flagler County Sheriff's Office says the incident allegedly occurred while Melady was on duty and wearing his uniform.

Additional Allegations

In March 2025, prosecutors announced additional charges, alleging Melady stole credit cards and personal identification from patients during emergency calls and used that information to make fraudulent purchases. Authorities say one such transaction was a $715 purchase at Sam's Club. Investigators identified three alleged victims connected to the theft and fraud allegations.

Charges and Court Status

Melady has been charged with sexual battery on a helpless person, video voyeurism involving a victim aged 19 or older, fraudulent use of personal identification (including allegations involving a victim 60 years of age or older), and unlawful possession of a stolen credit card. Court records show Melady has pleaded not guilty. Local reports indicate jury selection began on Monday, Dec. 8.

"He continually violated his oath and used his position as a first responder to take advantage of victims," Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said.

Daytona Beach police reportedly found the video while investigating Melady on unrelated matters. When detectives interviewed the woman shown in the footage, she said she was unaware of any assault during her ambulance transport.
