U.S. Deports 55 Iranians, Tehran Says — Flight Also Carried Passengers From Other Countries

The Mizan News Agency and Iranian officials say 55 Iranians were deported from the United States, a move Tehran described as the result of discriminatory U.S. immigration policies. Iranian spokespeople said the deportees agreed to return, while a U.S. official told The New York Times the aircraft was a routine removal flight that included passengers from other countries. Reports say some non-Iranian passengers disembarked in Cairo and the Iranians transited via Kuwait to Tehran. Fox News reached out to DHS for comment and the Associated Press contributed reporting.

Iranian state media and international outlets report that 55 Iranian nationals were deported from the United States in a recent removal flight, a move Tehran says reflects discriminatory U.S. immigration policies.

The Mizan News Agency, which represents Iran’s judiciary, published a report Monday citing Foreign Ministry official Mojtaba Shasti Karimi as acknowledging that 55 Iranians were being returned. According to the account quoted by The Associated Press, the official said the individuals "announced their willingness for return following continuation of anti-immigration and discriminative policy against foreign nationals, particularly Iranians, by the United States."

"These individuals announced their willingness for return following continuation of anti-immigration and discriminative policy against foreign nationals particularly Iranians by the United States," the report quoted the official as saying.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei told Reuters, "In the coming days, about 55 nationals will return to Iran.... This is the second group being returned to Iran in the latest months."

The New York Times reported that a U.S. official described the aircraft as a routine deportation flight that also carried nationals of other countries. Iranian officials said some Arab and Russian passengers were expected to disembark in Cairo, while the Iranian nationals would continue to Kuwait and then board a chartered Kuwait Airways flight to Tehran.

Fox News Digital said it reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment. The Associated Press also contributed to reporting on the incident. Observers note the deportations come amid an intensified U.S. effort to enforce immigration rules under the Trump administration.
