A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the northern coast of Japan on Monday, prompting the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue a regional tsunami alert.

The quake occurred offshore of Hokkaido near the coastal area of Aomori. The JMA located the epicenter roughly 50 kilometers (about 30 miles) beneath the sea surface.

Tsunami Warning

Officials warned that tsunami waves as high as 3 meters (about 10 feet) could affect coastal communities in the region. Local authorities urged residents in vulnerable areas to move to higher ground and follow official evacuation orders and guidance.

What Residents Should Do

If you are in the affected area: Stay tuned to official announcements, avoid the coast and low-lying areas, and follow instructions from local emergency services. Even modest seiches and strong currents can be dangerous along harbors and shorelines after a major offshore quake.

Authorities have not released further details about damage or casualties at this time. The JMA continues to monitor the situation and will update warnings as needed.
