‘The Baby Is Coming!’ Oklahoma Trooper Helps Deliver Newborn on Highway Shoulder

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Tyler Shelby assisted with an unplanned roadside birth on Nov. 22 after a woman in active labor pulled onto the shoulder in southwest Oklahoma. Dashcam footage shows the mother announcing, "The baby is coming!" and Shelby helping deliver the newborn boy, later named Finley. An ambulance arrived shortly after and transported both mother and baby to the hospital; OHP says they are doing well. Officials noted troopers receive basic childbirth training for such emergencies.

An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper on routine patrol became an unexpected lifesaver on Nov. 22 when he helped deliver a newborn on the shoulder of a highway in southwest Oklahoma.

What Happened

Trooper Tyler Shelby had been asked to assist with traffic control for an ambulance responding to a woman in active labor. About a mile from the original call, Shelby pulled up behind a black Chevrolet Camaro parked on the shoulder with its passenger door open and the mother seated in the front.

Dashcam footage released by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) shows Shelby approaching to reassure the mother that help was on the way. The situation accelerated moments later when the woman announced,

"The baby is coming!"
and Shelby replied,
"Well, don’t push!"

Within seconds the trooper assisted with the delivery — his first. "All I did was play catch," Shelby later told OHP.

Aftercare and Training

The ambulance arrived shortly after the birth and transported both the mother and the newborn — a baby boy named Finley — to a hospital for further care. OHP said both mother and baby are doing well. After the transfer, Trooper Shelby returned to his patrol duties.

OHP noted that troopers receive medical training that includes the basics of childbirth so they are prepared for unexpected situations. "Our medical training includes the basics of delivering a baby — something we hope we don’t encounter often — but when the moment comes, our troopers are ready to help," the agency said.

OHP did not immediately respond to requests for additional comment. The agency also referenced a similar unexpected roadside delivery earlier this year in Michigan, when a couple had a baby in a McDonald’s parking lot.
