‘Hold On!’ Dramatic Bodycam Shows NYPD Harbor Officers Dive Into Icy Water To Save Man

Bodycam footage released by NYPD News shows Harbor Unit officers diving into near-freezing water on Nov. 30 to rescue a man who could not climb onto a life ring. After shouting 'Hold on! Hold on!' two officers stepped over a guardrail, counted down and jumped in. They secured the man, used a ladder as an improvised backboard to haul him ashore, and transferred him to a waiting ambulance. The NYPD said the individual is in stable condition.

On Nov. 30, officers from the New York Police Department's Harbor Unit jumped into near-freezing water to rescue a man who could not climb onto a life ring. Body-worn camera footage posted to the NYPD News account on X captured the tense, fast-moving rescue.

The video shows officers tossing a bright orange life ring to the struggling man. One rescuer can be heard saying he was 'too frozen' and might fall off the ring. Several officers then shout, 'Hold on! Hold on!' as two Harbor Unit members step over the guardrail to attempt a direct rescue.

An officer counts 'One, two, three!' and the two rescuers launch themselves into the icy water, swim out to the man and secure him. One officer wraps the victim in a tight bear hug and repeatedly soothes him: 'I got you! You're okay! Relax! Nice and easy!'

The officers guide the man toward a rocky stretch of shore, place a ladder beneath him as an improvised backboard, and haul him from the water before transferring him to a waiting ambulance. NYPD News said the individual was taken to medical care and is now in stable condition.

Why this matters: The footage highlights the Harbor Unit's rapid response, teamwork and willingness to enter hazardous conditions to save a life. The rescue demonstrates training and quick judgment under pressure.
