At Least 7 Dead, 11 Injured After Passenger Bus Rear-Ends Truck Stopped for Flat Tire on Turkish Highway

On Dec. 6 a passenger bus rear-ended a truck stopped for a flat tire on the Izmir–Gaziantep route in Osmaniye province, killing seven and injuring 11. Video from the scene shows heavy damage to the bus's front-right side as emergency crews cleared debris. The truck driver survived and was detained by police, and local officials said authorities are continuing their investigation.

At least seven people were killed and 11 others injured on the morning of Dec. 6 when a passenger bus rear-ended a truck that had stopped on the highway because of a flat tire, authorities said.

Crash Details

The collision occurred on the Izmir–Gaziantep route in the Bahçe district of Osmaniye province in southern Turkey, according to Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency (AA). AA reported that the large passenger bus struck the truck from behind after the truck had stopped on the roadway to address a flat tire.

Video shared by AA from the scene shows emergency crews clearing debris while the bus's front-right section appears badly damaged. Multiple police teams and medical responders were dispatched to the site. Initial information from the Osmaniye Governor's Office said seven passengers aboard the bus died and 11 were injured.

Osmaniye Governor Erdinç Yilmaz posted on Facebook offering condolences: "I extend my condolences and God's mercy to the citizens who lost their lives in the accident... I offer my sympathies to their families and wish a speedy recovery to the injured." In his post the crash was described as involving a tow truck and a passenger bus on the Osmaniye–Gaziantep route.

Aftermath And Investigation

Local outlets Turkish Minute and Daily Sabah reported that the truck driver survived the crash and was taken into police custody. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision. PEOPLE contacted the Osmaniye Governor's Office and the Osmaniye Police for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

Emergency teams remained on site following the crash to assist the injured and secure the scene. Officials have not released additional details about the identities of the victims or the exact cause of the collision beyond initial reports that the truck had stopped for a flat tire.
