Quilen Blackwell was named CNN’s 2025 Hero of the Year after transforming vacant lots on Chicago’s South Side into six flower farms that employ at‑risk youth through Southside Blooms. Founded by Blackwell and his wife Hannah in 2015, the nonprofit trains young people in horticulture and floral design, currently employing 25 people aged 16–25. Blackwell will receive $100,000 plus additional funding and capacity-building support from the Elevate Prize Foundation to scale the program; a second location is planned for the West Side this spring.
