Nightclub Fire in Arpora, North Goa, Leaves 23 Dead

At least 23 people, including several tourists, were killed in a blaze that tore through a popular nightclub in Arpora, a well-known party area in North Goa, just after midnight on Sunday, officials said.

Pramod Sawant, the chief minister of Goa, said most of the victims were the club's kitchen workers while three to four of those killed were tourists. Local police, quoted by the Press Trust of India, said the fire was reportedly triggered by a gas cylinder blast. Firefighters have since extinguished the flames and all bodies have been recovered.

The state government has ordered an inquiry to establish the precise cause of the fire and to determine whether fire-safety standards and building regulations were followed at the venue.

"We will investigate the exact cause and check compliance with all safety norms," Sawant said.

The western coastal state of Goa, famed for its beaches and nightlife, attracts domestic and international tourists year-round. Authorities did not immediately release the names of the victims or further details about the injured, if any.
