Nationwide Recall: About 9,400 Crayola-Branded Magnetic Pip-Cube Sets Pulled Over Swallowing Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled about 9,400 CreateOn Crayola-branded magnetic pip-cube sets sold from May through July after finding the internal magnets can fall out and be swallowed. The 24- and 27-piece "Bold Colors" and "Glitter" kits were sold at Michael's and online for about $20. Consumers should stop using the toys immediately and return them with a pre-paid label from CreateOn for replacement; no injuries have been reported so far.

Crayola-Branded Magnetic Pip-Cubes Recalled Nationally

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a nationwide recall of approximately 9,400 CreateOn Crayola-branded magnetic pip-cube building sets after determining the toys pose a serious ingestion hazard to young children.

What’s wrong: The 24- and 27-piece kits contain small magnetic building cubes whose seams can separate, allowing powerful internal magnets to fall out. If swallowed, high-powered magnets can attract to each other or to other metal objects inside the digestive tract, potentially causing intestinal perforation, twisting, blockage, sepsis and even death.

Products affected: The recalled sets were sold in "Bold Colors" (red, green, blue and yellow) and "Glitter" (purple, pink, blue and green) packs. Each cube is imprinted with the Crayola name on the left side. Model and UPC numbers are printed on the bottom of the product packaging; consumers should check packaging to confirm whether their set is included in the recall.

Where and when sold: The kits were sold at Michael's stores nationwide and online at Michaels.com and Amazon.com from May through July for about $20.

What to do: Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled magnetic pip-cubes, keep them away from children and pets, and return the product using a pre-paid label provided by CreateOn. CreateOn is offering replacement pip-cubes. For return instructions and more information, follow the CPSC recall notice or contact CreateOn directly.

Injuries: According to the CPSC, no injuries have been reported to date in connection with these products.

“When high-powered magnets are swallowed, the ingested magnets can attract to each other, or other metal objects, and become lodged in the digestive system,” the CPSC said, warning of the potentially severe consequences.

At the time of the CPSC announcement, Crayola and CreateOn had not issued a public comment to media requests.
