Peterborough Councillor Arrested After Claiming Threatening Voicemail Was AI-Generated

Ontario councillor Corinna Traill was arrested and charged with two counts of uttering threats after a former mayoral candidate posted an alleged voicemail threatening violence to deter his candidacy. Tom Dingwall said the August message warned the caller would kill him and sexually assault his wife. Traill has denied creating the entire recording, asserting portions were artificially generated and that her team was investigating. She was released on her own recognizance and is due in court in January.

Ontario councillor Corinna Traill was arrested Wednesday and charged with two counts of uttering threats, the Peterborough Police Service said.

The charges stem from allegations made public in September by former mayoral candidate Tom Dingwall, who posted on Facebook that he received an August voicemail in which the caller warned him not to run for mayor. Dingwall wrote that the message threatened that the caller would "come to my home, kill me, and sexually assault my wife, then sexually assault her again."

"Miss Traill made it clear that if I did not, she would come to my home, kill me, and sexually assault my wife, then sexually assault her again," Dingwall wrote, calling for Traill to resign and saying no elected official should use intimidation to deter someone from seeking office.

In September Traill denied creating the entire voicemail and said parts of the recording were produced using artificial intelligence. In a Facebook statement she said she had been advised AI technology was involved, that some segments contained her voice while other portions were artificially generated, and that her team was investigating who created the recording.

The Peterborough Police Service said Traill was released on her own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in court in January. The department announced the arrest but did not provide additional operational details.

Fox News Digital reported the arrest and said it had reached out to Traill for comment. The investigation and any forensic analysis of the recording have not been publicly detailed by authorities.
