Tennessee Mother Charged After Young Children Hospitalized

Gibson County, Tenn. — Authorities say two children, ages 2 and 4, were found unresponsive on Nov. 28 after ingesting THCA gummies stored in their mother's bathroom. Deputies from the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on the 300 block of Trenton Highway after a family member reported the children had accessed an unknown amount of the product, according to an affidavit and local news reports.

The mother, identified in booking records as Candice Hickson, 43, told deputies the children reached the product while she was in the bathroom, the affidavit says. The children were transported to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, treated and released within 48 hours, per a Gibson County press release and local reporting.

Hickson was booked into the Gibson County jail on Nov. 30 and has been charged with child abuse/neglect/endangerment, according to county records. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 16.

District Attorney Statement: "Our Office will prosecute this case within the letter of the law, balancing the need to help Ms. Hickson get treatment for her addiction, so that she can eventually reunite with her children in a safe environment," said District Attorney Frederick H. Agee of the 28th Judicial District, per a press release.

Following medical treatment, both children were placed in the custody of the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services after Hickson reportedly failed a drug test for methamphetamine. Authorities continue to handle the case through the local court system; no additional updates about the children's condition beyond their release from the hospital have been released publicly.

What Happened Next

The case remains pending. Court records list the preliminary hearing on Dec. 16 as the next public milestone; prosecutors have indicated they will pursue charges while also seeking treatment options intended to protect the children and, potentially, support family reunification if appropriate.
