Child Dies After Severe Asthma Attack While Shopping With Mother

A 6-year-old boy, identified as Magnus Landon Kayde, died after suffering what family and local reports described as a severe asthma attack at the Urangan Shopping Centre in Queensland, Australia, on Nov. 28.

Paramedics attended the scene and transported Magnus to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite life-saving efforts, he later died at the hospital.

"My son tragically passed at the Urangan shopping centre. It is a devastating loss not only to my daughters and me but everyone who loved him," wrote his mother, Casey Morris, on a GoFundMe page.

Morris described Magnus as having been "very unwell" and having overcome many health hurdles in the past. She remembered his humour and a small, joyful moment from the day he died: he had caught a toad he named Jeff, and was beginning to come out of his shell.

On the GoFundMe page Morris thanked those who tried to save her son and the people who comforted her in the aftermath: "I will forever be grateful... Magnus will be missed immensely and my heart is breaking every day. I just want my baby back."

Eyewitnesses told the Daily Mail the scene at the shopping centre was distressing. One witness said the mother was "so distraught" and offered condolences to the family; another described being unprepared to see a small child in such an emergency when they stepped forward to help.

As of Dec. 6, the Urangan Shopping Centre and the Queensland Ambulance Service had not provided a comment to People. The incident has since been shared on social fundraising pages and covered by local outlets as family and friends mourn Magnus and thank those who assisted during the emergency.
