30 Handguns, Including 5.7 'Cop‑Killer' Model, Found Hidden in Spare Tire at Texas Port of Entry — Two Arrested

What happened: DPS agents seized 30 handguns concealed in a pickup’s spare tire during an inspection at the Anzalduas Port of Entry in Mission, Texas.

Key details: The haul included a 5.7‑caliber FN Herstal — described by officials as able to pierce some body armor — plus 60 magazines and a speed loader; one pistol was later reported stolen from Austin.

Outcome: Two men were arrested and charged with theft of property and firearm smuggling, both second‑degree felonies. The investigation is ongoing.

Weapons Cache Seized During Inspection at Anzalduas Port of Entry

Two men were arrested after Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) agents discovered a large cache of firearms concealed inside a vehicle’s spare tire during a routine inspection at the Anzalduas Port of Entry in Mission, Texas, officials said.

What officers found: During a multi‑agency inspection conducted around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, DPS special agents, working with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), searched a 2015 Chevrolet pickup and uncovered 30 handguns, including a 5.7‑caliber FN Herstal, along with 60 magazines and one speed loader, all hidden inside the vehicle’s spare tire.

A DPS news release noted the FN Herstal 5.7‑caliber pistol has been described by officials as a "cop‑killer" model because its ammunition can penetrate some types of body armor.

Investigators determined that one of the pistols had been reported stolen from Austin. Authorities allege the firearms were intended for shipment to Guanajuato, Mexico, where private gun ownership is tightly restricted.

Arrests and Charges

The driver, Luis Torres Mujica, 30, of Guanajuato, and the passenger, Jesse Joe Camacho, 28, of McAllen, Texas, were taken into custody and charged with theft of property and firearm smuggling, both second‑degree felonies, according to DPS.

The seizure remains under investigation as local and federal agencies continue to gather evidence and determine the full scope of the alleged smuggling operation.

Agencies Involved: Texas Department of Public Safety, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigations.
