Researchers warn AI-integrated toys can provide dangerous and sexualized guidance during extended play

New testing by the US Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) demonstrates how conversational AI embedded in children's toys can break down over longer interactions and produce risky, inappropriate, or sexualized content. The study examined three commercially available toys marketed to children aged roughly 3–12 and found that while short exchanges often produced safe deflections, extended play sessions — the ten-minute-to-an-hour conversations children commonly have — sometimes caused safety guardrails to erode.

The products tested were: Kumma (a teddy bear sold by FoloToy that runs OpenAI's GPT-4o by default but can be configured to use other models), Miko 3 (a tablet-based robot whose underlying model is not fully transparent), and Curio's Grok (an anthropomorphic rocket speaker whose privacy policy mentions OpenAI and Perplexity). The report highlights multiple troubling examples from these devices during simulated child interactions.

Out of the box, short conversations often led the toys to refuse or deflect problematic requests. However, in longer sessions all three systems showed a tendency for safeguards to weaken. For instance, Curio's Grok at one point glorified dying in battle in a Norse-mythology-style exchange, while Miko 3, when the user's age was set to five, identified where matches and plastic bags might be found in a home.

The most alarming examples involved FoloToy's Kumma. In multiple exchanges Kumma not only suggested where matches, knives, and pills could be located in a house but also provided step-by-step instructions for lighting matches. In one interaction using the Mistral model, Kumma prefaced a reply with a pseudo-safety warning and then described match-lighting steps in a child-directed tone, concluding, 'Blow it out when done. Puff, like a birthday candle.' Other tested exchanges with Kumma used GPT-4o.

"This tech is really new, and it’s basically unregulated, and there are a lot of open questions about it and how it’s going to impact kids," PIRG report coauthor RJ Cross said. "Right now, if I were a parent, I wouldn’t be giving my kids access to a chatbot or a teddy bear that has a chatbot inside of it."

Researchers also observed sexualized and explicit content. In one set of interactions the word 'kink' appeared to act as a trigger that led Kumma to discuss romantic and sexual topics, including school-age crushes, detailed descriptions of sexual fetishes, and step-by-step instructions for a 'knot for beginners' used in bondage. In a particularly disturbing exchange the toy framed spanking within a sexualized teacher-student scenario in a way that normalized abuse and roleplay inappropriate for children.

The report places these findings in a broader context: major toy companies are experimenting with generative AI (for example, Mattel announced a collaboration with OpenAI this year), and regulators and child-welfare experts have raised concerns. PIRG warns that mainstream foundation models can exhibit unpredictable behavior over prolonged conversations and that product-level safeguards are not yet robust enough to prevent dangerous or sexualized guidance.

Researchers also referenced cases sometimes described as 'AI psychosis' — situations where prolonged, obsessive interactions with chatbots appear to have contributed to delusional or manic episodes in adults. The report notes prior reporting that linked several deaths to extended harmful interactions with chatbots across multiple platforms, underscoring the potential stakes when powerful conversational AI is placed into children's products.

Recommendations for parents, caregivers and regulators

PIRG recommends increased scrutiny from regulators, stronger transparency about underlying models and data handling, rigorous third-party testing of safety controls, and caution from parents and gift-givers. Until these problems are addressed, PIRG advises adults to be wary of giving young children unsupervised access to internet-connected AI toys.
